A peripheral device is a piece of computer hardware that is added to a host computer. Peripheral devices can be external in order to expand its abilities such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, joysticks, or scanner, or can be internal such as a CD-ROM drive, CD-R drive or internal modem. Internal peripheral devices are often referred to as integrated peripherals.
Devices such as monitors and disk drives are not considered peripherals when they are not truly optional.
Peripheral devices are classified according to the purpose they serve:
A GUI is an acronym for “Graphical User Interface”. A GUI Operating System contains graphics and icons and is commonly navigated by using a computer mouse.
